A Merdeka Day Message

August 30, 2008 |

Change. That’s what it’s all about this year, isn’t it? Well, at least that’s what has been grabbing our attention both in Malaysia and abroad. Regardless of whether it’s A New Dawn For Malaysia or Change We Can Believe In, change seems to be the theme of the day.

And, somehow, most people seem to be quite happy with the changes or looking forward to the impending changes. I guess people are just fed up with the status quo. Although I am encouraged by the enthusiasm for change, I note an anomaly here.

As far as I know, people just love their comfort zones. And people resist change all the time. Isn’t it true? Try changing the culture in an organisation and you will see how apparent this is.

So, how do we explain this anomaly?

Firstly, like I said earlier, people are probably just fed up with the current situation.

Secondly, at the risk of sounding cynical, frustrated people are usually more ready to believe sweet promises.

Lastly, and I think this is the clincher: as long as people do not think that they personally have to make any changes in their lives or sacrifice anything, then the change is so much easier to swallow.

When we believe that the politicians and the leaders will be doing all the hard work to bring about the changes that we are going to enjoy, it’s so much easier for us to seat back and simply support them, right?

I hope I’m not right but it certainly looks that way. If you take a look at my earlier postings on Change, you’ll see what I’m getting at.

Anyway, Happy Merdeka Day!
